Cash boost to IT career, Diamond Valley Leader

A YOUNG IT guru from Watsonia North is one of the first students in Victoria to be awarded a Westpac Young Technologists scholarship.

Gabriella Makridis is studying for a Bachelor of Information Technology at RMIT University.

“I’ve grown up around IT,” Ms Makridis said.

“I’ve always been interested in video games and computers, and I have a really tech-savvy family.”

As part of the scholarship, Ms Makridis will receive up to $25,000 across the duration of her degree, as well as the opportunity to go to a Westpac summit each year.

Ms Makridis said the money would help limit her HECS debt, as well as buy textbooks, computer programs and a laptop.

As a young woman going into the industry, Ms Makridis said IT was often portrayed as an unviable career path for girls.

“I went to an all-girls high school and IT was not an available option,” she said.

“I thought ‘it doesn’t matter if you don’t offer it, I’m still going to do it anyway’.”
